Down IV Part I - The Purple EP is the first EP of the sludge band Down . It was released on September 18, 2012. It is the band's first release with bassist Patrick Bruders , who joined the band instead of Rex Brown .
Origin and style
In October 2011, Down went to Phil Anselmo's own studio, "Nosferatu's Lair", to record Down IV . Phil Anselmo announced in January 2012 that the band would release the first of four EPs in September instead of a single studio album. At the end of July 2012 the title and artwork of the EP were revealed. The band goes back stylistically to their roots and processes influences from Black Sabbath , Saint Vitus and Witchfinder General .

Natalie Zed from About.com gave 3.5 stars out of five. "While the sound of this record is classic Down, delivered without experimentation or flourish, the form of the album is where the band allow themselves freedom to explore, and very successfully." On the one hand, the EP is very satisfactory, but it also makes you hungry more - "a good balance."
