The Dr. H. G. Waider Foundation was founded by Heinz G. Waider in 1988. Its aim is international understanding through linguistic and cultural exchange among young people. The foundation has been awarding the Winfried Prize since 2001 , which is awarded in Fulda .

The founder, born in Fulda in 1926 , was a chemist and businessman, sold his successful trading company in 1988 and decided to invest part of the proceeds in a foundation.

At the age of 16, Waider was deployed as an air force helper in World War II . In 1943 he was captured by the British and did forced labor in Egypt. After studying chemistry in Mainz and Frankfurt am Main , Waider worked for several international companies in Sweden and the USA .

In 1973 he founded his own company in Neuss .

Based on his life experience, the founder came to the conviction that wars can only be prevented if people of different nationalities get to know one another and are committed to promoting international understanding.
