The Dr.-Konrad-Duden-Gymnasium Schleiz , so named after Konrad Duden , who did the essential work on his dictionary of the German language there from 1869 to 1876, continues the tradition of the old Fürstlich Reuss-Schleizer Gymnasium Rutheneum . At the school, 46 teachers teach about 600 students in 26 classes.

history

The German Order had already operated a Latin school in its Kommende Schleiz (→ List of Monasteries and Orders in Thuringia ) since the 14th century, which developed into a city school. Prince Heinrich IX. Reuss (1616–1666), who received the Schleiz rule in 1647 , donated 1,000 guilders and in 1656 elevated the school to a grammar school. In the great city fire of 1689, the school building fell victim to the flames and a new building could not be inaugurated until 1735. In 1923 the school moved into the building of the closed teachers' college in Hofer Straße, where it is still located today. The historic building has housed the Rutheneum Museum since 2001, which also commemorates Konrad Duden.

After the Second World War , the school continued as an extended secondary school , and from 1982 as a polytechnic secondary school . In 1990, after the reunification , it became a high school again. In 1991 it took the name after its famous director. Like many traditional schools, this one also has a school library that contains around 500 historical books.
