The Dr. Paul Lohmann GmbH & Co. KGaA is a German chemical company with headquarters in Emmerthal in Lower Saxony .

history

From the foundation to the First World War

In 1873 the pharmacist Victor Sertürner and the chemist August Rundspaden set up a chemical factory in Hameln for the manufacture of products that were defined in the Pharmacopoeia Germanica , which came into force in the German Empire from 1873 . After the builders fell out, Paul Lohmann leased the factory in 1886 and bought it in 1887 to continue production and set up his own business. The most important product of the factory was Ferrum hydrogenio reductum , i.e. reduced iron. Paul Lohmann, who was inexperienced in managing a chemical factory, was able to transform the factory, which was empty at the beginning, into a profitable company within four years. In 1895 Paul Lohmman bought the Klussmann factory in Hameln, which also produced Ferrum hydrogenio reductum. Since the Hamelin factory von Lohmann and the Klussmann'sche factory were the only ones in the German Reich that produced Ferrum hydrogenio reductum, Degussa contacted Paul Lohmann in 1887 and 1902 to take over production. In addition to pharmaceuticals , Dr. Paul Lohmann produced weed killers , cleaning products and other products around the turn of the century and is one of the classic multi-product companies. After the expansion of the factory in 1903, Paul Lohmann agreed with Degussa to stop the production of Ferrum reductum and to supply his customers with Ferrum reductum from Degussa's production. In the same year, Dr. Paul Lohmann, Degussa and Merck came together to form a Ferrum convention that agreed the prices for the product.

Weimar Republic until moving to Emmerthal in 1955

After the death of the eldest son Fritz in 1919, the younger brother Rudolf Lohmann joined the company after the First World War . In 1929 there was a dispute over the direction of the company. Paul Lohmann saw the future in the chemical sector, while his son Rudolf preferred the focus on drugstore items and pharmaceuticals. In 1931 Rudolf Lohmann took over the company, intensified the development of pharmaceutical chemicals and in 1938 transferred this division to the Heimbürger company, which also belonged to Lohmann. The production of ferric chloride and ferric chloride liquor was also given up. During the Second World War , entrepreneurial leeway was restricted and production was controlled by the state . In 1940, the company's labor office assigned forced laborers to work. After the sale of the company A. Heimbürger und Nachf., Rudolf Lohmann founded the company Lomapharm in order to bundle the pharmaceutical products and to do commissioned work for other pharmaceutical companies. After the city of Hameln grew rapidly after the war and the factory was now surrounded by the city, Rudolf Lohmann bought the former yeast factory in Emmern in 1951 and the former Gomelit soap factory in Kirchohsen in 1954. Rudolf Lohmann's eldest son Ekkehard Lohmann planned and organized the relocation of the factory from Hameln to Emmern and Kirchohsen while production continued unabated.

Post war history

In 1959 Rudolf Lohmann bought the Neudorff company . In 1961 Ekkehard Lohmann took over the management of the company. On February 11, 1962, the foundation stone was laid for a chemical factory in Calcutta, which is a joint venture between the entrepreneur Sen Gupta and Dr. Paul Lohmann was in some form of a stock corporation. On the trip to Calcutta, Ekkehard Lohmann negotiated with Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals in St. Louis , which had been led by Dr. Paul Lohmann had been supplied with ferrum reductum. Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals licensed the production of iron fumerate by Dr. Paul Lohmann for the DACH region. From 1961, more and more foreign employees worked for Dr. Paul Lohmann. When the first workers came from Italy, Spain in 1973 and Turkey in 1979 made up most of the non-German workers. After the joint venture in India repeatedly ran into difficulties due to the external framework conditions, Dr. Paul Lohmann took over the shares of Dr. Paul Lohmann (India) Ltd. 1972 to a company from Bombay . In 1972 a new factory for magnesium salts was built and opened in Lüneburg , which was on the edge of the zone . The Neudorff company has also been producing there since 1987.

Legal dispute over the Grohnde NPP

In 1974, Hans Joachim Lohmann for the Lomapharm and Ekkehard Lohmann for the Dr. Paul Lohmann's objections to the construction of the Grohnde nuclear power plant . They alleged that the nuclear power plant could cause emissions , pollution and climatic changes that could affect production in their companies. From 1976, the companies took legal action against the construction of the Grohnde nuclear power plant. If the plaintiffs had initially achieved a construction freeze, this was lifted in 1979 by the Lüneburg Higher Administrative Court . Thereupon Hans Joachim Lohmann and Ekkehard Lohmann lodged a constitutional complaint because lifting the construction freeze violated the Basic Law. In 1982 the Higher Administrative Court ruled that the operators of the Grohnde nuclear power plant had to pass to Dr. Paul Lohmann and Lohmapharm have to pay a total of 12.2 million marks so that the companies can make safety and preventive investments in order to prevent their production from being contaminated by the Grohnde nuclear power plant . In addition to the constant optimization and modernization of production, environmental protection was also given greater consideration. The improvement of the water treatment was particularly important. In 1998 Jürgen Lohmann took over the management of Dr. Paul Lohmann GmbH & Co. KGaA from Ekkehard Lohmann . He changed the company structure so that the company is led by three managing directors.

The company today

In 2004 the managing directors Jürgen Lohmann , Uwe Günther and Torsten Cuno decided to establish Dr. Paul Lohmann in such a way that customers are offered more service, e.g. B. premixes should be offered to food manufacturers. To achieve this goal, the production capacity was increased, the logistics optimized and the areas of research, development and application expanded. In 2007 Dr. Paul Lohmann took over the mineral salts division at Boehringer Ingelheim . In 2013 the Lomapharm company was sold to the private equity company (DUBAG). The Dr. Paul Lohmann currently produces "400 different salts in a total of over 7000 different specifications" for different applications at the Emmerthal and Lüneburg production sites.
