Dragon Hunters is an animated series by Futurikon based on an idea by Arthur Qwak . Set in a fantastic medieval world full of small floating islands terrorized by dragons, it tells the story of the adventures of the two dragon hunters Gwizdo and Lian Chu.
Based on the series, the movie Die Drachenjäger - Der Film was released in 2008 .
action
What has happened to the earth? It consists only of debris floating through space like asteroids. The people are thrown back into medieval conditions and live under mostly simple conditions in cities, villages or even in castles. In addition, however, many dangerous dragons populate the island chains, which extend over different climatic and vegetation zones.
The two friends Gwizdo and Lian Chu live in this world. They grew up together in an orphanage and have been an (almost) inseparable team ever since. They have grown up now and try to get by more badly than dragon hunters. The cunning but not very courageous Gwizdo takes over the business part, while the strong but good-natured Lian Chu is responsible for the fighting. They are accompanied by the little blue dragon Hector, who does most of the relief work, e.g. B. Carrying weapons or driving the helicopter with which the hunters get from island to island.
Your base of operations is the hostel "Zum schnorenden Drachen", which is run by the resolute landlady Jeanneline. Unfortunately, the dragon hunters there mostly have debts. Either the "Goldonen" (that is the currency in the area around Jeannelines Herberge) are only enough for repairs to the damage that occurred during the hunt, or the treasures they brought with them prove to be worthless, or the dragon hunters can't even make it with the wealth they have acquired until home. Therefore, they are repeatedly called upon to do housework, which Gwizdo in particular does not like. After all, they can sometimes fill Jeanneline's pantry with their hunted booty, who knows how to prepare dragon dishes. In addition, Jeanneline has two daughters: little Zaza lives with her in the hostel and emulates the dragon hunters, the bigger Zoria is already traveling the world alone as a dragon hunter.
The episodes are each self-contained and mostly deal with the hunt for a certain dragon, although there are sometimes subplots. The locations are changing, with the hostel "Zum schnarchenden Drachen" (the snoring dragon) in particular returning and some episodes only being played there. Sometimes events from the past are also incorporated into flashbacks, but this never condenses into a coherent explanation of how this world came into being. It only becomes clear that the prevailing conditions have persisted for at least several generations. Only in the last episode, The Red Dragon (which is fourth from last in the French original), does a large, red dragon tell Qwizdo about the origin of his world: A white dragon mother and her three sons (a blue, a yellow and just the red one Dragons) have been creating suns with their fire since time immemorial. By a mistake by the red dragon, the first sun was destroyed, extinguished and broken into many small pieces that are now the islands. After that the red dragon was cast out, but at least it lit up this world with a little sun and taught people to speak. At least some of the islands are also deceased dragons, as becomes clear in the episode A Child's Play .
An important theme in the series are the relationships between the main characters, especially friendships and their tests, and the pursuit of wealth and the associated pitfalls are a motif throughout the series. It does not follow a strictly chronological narrative, but there are some episodes that refer to earlier events.
Characters
Gwizdo is the cheeky boss of the group. In the hostel he often brags in front of the guests about his heroic deeds, most of which were thanks to Lian Chu. In fact, Gwizdo is a terrible character; cowardly, egotistical, lazy, loudmouthed and occasionally he doesn't stop at taking advantage of his friends to get as many "Goldonen" (the general currency in this world) as possible. However, he has a heart of gold hidden deep inside. That rarely shows up, and mostly only thanks to the efforts of his friends. As the boss, he controls the aircraft, but his greatest talent is drawing up contracts. He often tries to trick his trading partners with complicated contract clauses and to exploit their predicament. This is all the easier because most people cannot read or write. Most of the time, however, it does not lead to success - sometimes also because his heart asserts itself. Otherwise he gets rich several times, but loses it every time.
Lian Chu is a very strong warrior with a strong code of honor. He is poorly educated and therefore very naive, but not completely stupid. Nobody understands dragons anymore (except maybe the noble Kao) and he is responsible for killing them. He leaves the business to Gwizdo. Aside from dragon hunting, he is very peaceful and reserved. Lian Chu suffered for a long time from growing up in the orphanage, which he processed after a special encounter with a dragon family in the first episode, The Dragon Mother . His greatest passion is knitting, which he practices every free minute. He dreams of earning enough money with Gwizdo to buy his own small farm and then be able to live there.
Hector is a cuddly, tame blue dragon. He is one of the few dragons that can speak, but only very indistinctly. It is often used as a decoy when hunting dragons. He is also responsible for transporting loads, especially for collecting weapons, and has to drive the airplane with pedals. But Hector is also Zaza's playmate and friend and protests against being seen as a dog.
Jeanneline is the heavyweight landlady of the inn to the snoring dragon , where Gwizdo and Lian Chu live. She often argues with Gwizdo over unpaid bills, but also over the bad influence the dragon hunters have on her daughters. Although Jeanneline doesn't like to admit it, she really likes Lian Chu and especially Gwizdo. She has three ex-husbands and it always becomes clear that she would like to marry again, preferably Gwizdo.
Zaza is Jeanneline's younger daughter and is around ten years old. She also wants to become a dragon hunter when she grows up, which her mother doesn't like at all. Your pig Leopold and you are an inseparable couple, whereby Leopold usually has to represent the evil dragon in their games. Sometimes she succeeds in sneaking out on a dragon hunt. Her two great role models are Lian Chu and Zoria.
Zoria is Zaza's older sister and is around 20 years old. She was trained in dragon hunter techniques by Lian Chu and has been traveling independently ever since. Although she is adopted and Jeanneline does not agree with her choice of profession, she and her mother have a very close relationship. In the episode The Lord of the Dragon it is revealed that Zoria is very likely the Zoe from the dragon hunter film (even though Jeanneline explains that she named her "Zoe" when she was adopted).
The noble Kao is an eccentric old doctor and scholar who keeps appearing. Usually the dragon hunters ask him for healing potions or information about dragons. He is almost blind and thinks Lian Chu and Gwizdo are mostly women, children or livestock. If he doesn't know what to do next because something "doesn't occur to him", sweets will help you remember.
The Schweinemeier brothers , Gilbert and Georg ("Schorsch"), are two dragon hunters and the most bitter competitors of Gwizdo and Lian Chu. They are not particularly smart and therefore mostly easy to fool.
Karl-Werner von Wismut is a prince who roams the country as a noble knight and dragon hunter. Since he does not ask for a fee, but presents himself as the savior of widows and orphans, he is a thorn in Gwizdo's side. Sometimes the dragon hunters also work with him.
