The three-leaved timeless ( Colchicum triphyllum ) is a plant species from the genus of the timeless ( Colchicum ) in the family of the timeless plants (Colchicaceae).

features

The three-leaved timeless is a perennial plant with an underground tuber. The tuber is elongated, 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long, 1 to 1.5 centimeters wide and wrapped in a maroon tunic. Leaves and flowers appear at the same time. There are usually 3, rarely 4 leaves . When they open, they are 3 to 4 centimeters long, fully developed they are 12 to 15 centimeters long and 4 to 11 millimeters wide. They are lanceolate, erect and rough or smooth on the edge. The number of flowers is usually 1 to 4, rarely up to 6. They are bell-shaped or funnel-shaped. The petals are narrowly elliptical and purple-pink, 15 to 30 millimeters long and 5 to 12 millimeters wide. The stamens have 5 to 9 millimeters long, bare filaments and about 3 millimeters long greenish or blackish-purple anthers. The pollen is yellow. The capsule fruits are egg-shaped, 2 to 3 centimeters long and dark brown.

Flowering time is from February to May, sometimes also in December.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 54 or 42.

Occurrence

The three-leaved timeless occurs in the western and eastern Mediterranean region as far as Romania, southern Russia and Iran. It grows on stony or sandy open soil.
