Drew Hendry (born May 31, 1964 ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Hendry grew up in Edinburgh . He initially worked in the areas of sales and production for the Swedish Electrolux group in Edinburgh. As he gradually rose within the company, he spent time at various European locations. In 1999 he and his wife moved to Tore on the Black Isle peninsula in Highland . In Inverness , he founded Teclan , a company that provides e-commerce services. Hendry is a supporter of the Heart of Midlothian football club in Edinburgh .

Political career

Although not yet eligible to vote, the 1979 Scottish referendum sparked Hendry's political interest. After supporting the SNP as a volunteer as a teenager, he joined the party in adulthood.

In 2007, Hendry was elected to the Highland Regional Council for the Aird and Loch Ness District SNP . After his party colleague John Finnie won a list mandate for the Scottish Parliament in the Scottish general elections in 2011 , Hendry was appointed parliamentary group leader of the SNP in Highland. In the 2009 European elections , Hendry was ranked fourth on the SNP electoral list. Since the SNP was only allowed to send two candidates as a result of the election result, Hendry missed a seat in the European Parliament .

In the 2012 regional elections, Hendry defended his mandate and was elected chairman of the ruling coalition made up of the SNP, Liberal Democrats and Labor Party . In the British general election in 2015 , Hendry ran for the first time to national elections. The SNP placed him in the constituency of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey , whose mandate was the Liberal Democrat Danny Alexander . With the massive gains in votes by the SNP in these elections, Hendry won the mandate and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . After his election to the House of Commons, Hendry resigned from chairing the regional council. In order to concentrate more on his parliamentary tasks, he resigned his council mandate in July 2015. Despite losing votes, Hendry maintained his mandate in the early general election in 2017 .
