history

Dromore Castle was believed to have been built in the early 16th century. Teige O'Brien had it repaired and expanded in the 17th century . Dromore Castle and lands were given to Teige's father, Connor O'Brien, 3rd Earl of Thomond , in 1579. Dermot O'Brien , Teige's son, was a major protagonist of the Confederate Wars and took part in the siege of Ballyalla Castle in Ennis. The last O'Brien in the castle was Conor O'Brien , who left in 1689. During the 18th century, the Tower House fell into disrepair.

description

Dromore Castle from the west

The Tower House is four stories high and the ground floor has a vaulted ceiling . To the right of the main entrance is a wide spiral staircase, to the left of it a small guard room and in the left chamber on the first floor there is an open stone fireplace.

A round arrow loop was cut into the stairs between the 1st and 2nd floors . On the roof there is a battlement , a tall, rectangular chimney crowned by two diamond-shaped chimneys , and consoles that once supported a crowd watch tower on the corner.

The inscription above the door reads: "This castle was built by von Teige, second son of Connor, third Earl of Thomond, and by Slany Brien, wife of the aforementioned Teige, Anno [date illegible]".
