The curse of Hellestad , also Drowning Ghost - The curse of Hellestad (original title: Strandvaskaren ) is a Swedish thriller by director Mikael Håfström from 2004. The film contains horror elements and takes place in a remote elite boarding school in the Swedish province.
action
In the opening credits, the student Rebecka is staged showering. Then she begins a suicide note, which she rejects, and she finally throws herself from the roof of the school building during a speech by the headmistress - she dies.
A year later, everyday life has returned to the boarding school. For a project, Sara is researching the local story of a farmer who killed three boarding school students around 100 years ago. Legend has it that the spirit of the farmer still roams around. A granddaughter of the farmer provides Sara with valuable information on the criminal case long ago. The farmer's 14-year-old daughter Elvira was abused and murdered by three students at the boarding school. Her father took revenge by killing the guilty. It turns out that one of the perpetrators was an ancestor of Måns. Sara researches that Rebecka, who committed suicide at the beginning of the film, just like the farmer's daughter 100 years ago, was the victim of abuse. Rebecka's father escapes from a closed institution. Felix turns out to be Rebecka's brother.
A group of schoolchildren are planning to have a party on the grounds of the now dilapidated farm. This event forms the framework for the showdown . Chases break out and several people lose their lives. Towards the end of the film, a skeleton is fished from an adjacent lake. In the last scene, Sara and Leo celebrate their graduation from high school.
background
The actress Rebecka Hemse , who plays the role of Sara in this film, is known from the crime series Kommissar Beck - The New Cases . There she embodies the daughter of Inspector Beck.
criticism
The internet portal cinema.de comments, “Unfortunately this Sweden import subtitled with The Curse of Hellestad develops the predictable dramaturgy of a run-of-the-mill slasher very quickly”.
The Mitteldeutsche Zeitung also draws this conclusion : "In the style of the typical, not particularly original US slasher movies, Håfström is probably already looking at the overseas market here ...".
Awards
The production was nominated for Best Film for the Narcisse Award at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in 2005 .
