Drunken Sailor is a traditional shanty , a seafaring work song, in the Doric mode . It is also known as What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor .

Originally the melody was taken from the traditional Irish dance and marching song Oró Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile . The same melody is used in the song Ten Little Injuns , for example .

The lyrics were first published in 1891 under the title What to Do With a Drunken Sailor? , the melodies were published as early as 1824-1825 in Cole's Selection of Favorite Cotillions in Baltimore . Another version was written by Richard Runciman Terry and reprinted in the songbook The Shanty Book, Part I, Sailor Shanties .
