Jabra Ibrahim Jabra (جبرا إبراهيم جبرا, Ǧabrā Ibrāhīm Ǧabrā ; * 1920 in Bethlehem , Palestine ; † 1994 in Baghdad , Iraq ) was a Palestinian writer.

biography

Jabra Ibrahim Jabra comes from a Christian family and spent his childhood in Bethlehem and his youth in Jerusalem . In 1939 he received a scholarship to study in England . He studied English literature first in Exeter , then in Cambridge until 1934 .

"The Zionist terror caused his family to return to Bethlehem in 1948".

Shortly afterwards he went into exile in Iraq and taught at a university in Baghdad. He later went to the United States and taught at Harvard and Berkeley . He worked in the information department of the Iraqi oil company. He married in Baghdad and lived there until his death. One of his sons lives in the United States, the other in New Zealand .

meaning

Jabra Ibrahim Jabra is an important Arab poet and writer. In addition to his poems and novels, he has written numerous translations from English into Arabic, including Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot , William Faulkner's Schall und Wahn , Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince and other fairy tales, as well as numerous works by William Shakespeare , including Hamlet , King Lear , Macbeth , Coriolanus , The Tempest and What you want , plus secondary literature.
