Dschang is a city in Cameroon . It is the administrative center of the Menoua department in the Ouest region .

Location and population

Dschang is located in the highlands of West Cameroon, in the French-speaking part of the country, at an altitude of 1380 m. Politically, the city belongs to the province of Ouest and has around 70,000 inhabitants. The population is mainly composed of Bamileke .

Dschang has been an important agricultural center since colonial times. Pig farming plays a major role today. In the city itself there is a post office, banks and petrol stations.

The traffic connection is via year-round drivable slopes, partly via asphalt roads. There are shared taxi and bus connections to Bafoussam and Yaoundé .

Dschang emerged as a regional center in the German colonial era through the construction of a military station within the Foréké-Chefferie, which replaced the former Fontemdorf station as the district seat in May 1907 . The station was relocated and built up by the officer Emil Rausch , who headed the district management until 1914.

Until 1912 Dschang was the seat of the 8th Company of the Imperial Protection Force under military administration and was then transferred to civil administration and in 1913 raised to the district office. The first agricultural test station and an agricultural school for the indigenous population were set up as early as the German era.

The majority of the population in Dschang belongs to the Catholic Church. Protestant denominations and Islam are also represented to a larger extent.

education

Since 1993 Dschang has been the seat of a university with faculties a. a. for law and political science and agriculture.
