Gottlieb Krause (historian)

Gottlieb Krause (born June 26, 1804 in Gustau near Quaritz , Silesia , † February 25, 1888 in Naumburg ) was a German historian and palace librarian at the court of the Dukes of Anhalt-Köthen .

Life

Gottlieb Krause was a native of Silesia. Nothing is known about its early years. He was in the service of the noble Silesian family Schoenaich-Carolath when he was appointed curator of the ducal library, the castle archive and the Naumann ornithological collection in Köthen by Duke Heinrich von Anhalt-Köthen in 1842 . Since Heinrich was also Prince of Anhalt-Pless since 1841 , it can be assumed that he had already met Krause in Silesia.

Gottlieb Krause made significant contributions as the librarian of the ducal collections in Köthen. For the first time he referred science to important archival material, especially the existence of the earliest "Erzschreins" (archive) of the Fruitful Society with numerous documents on the development of the German language. In extensive edited volumes he published thousands of letters and files from the time of the Thirty Years' War , as well as excerpts from the many-volume diary of Christian II of Anhalt-Bernburg , an important historical source.

We also owe his historical research to the three-volume biography of Prince Ludwig I. von Anhalt-Köthen , a biography of the famous didactician Wolfgang Ratke , as well as numerous individual publications on the history of Anhalt. After nearly four decades of productive activity, he retired in 1879.

Gottlieb Krause got married (probably only in Koethen) with Antonie, geb. Reuter. This marriage resulted in four children, including the well-known chemist Georg Krause , founder of the “Chemiker-Zeitung”. In retirement he lived with his daughter Agnes in Naumburg from 1883, where he died in 1888 at the age of 84. His body was immediately transferred to Koethen and buried three days later on February 28th in the old cemetery in Koethen .

Honors

• In 1874 Duke Friedrich I appointed the deserved scholar Knight 2nd Class of the Duke of Anhalt House Order of Albrecht the Bear . At the same time he received the title of court counselor.
