The jungle dwarf fisherman ( Ceyx erithacus , syn .: Ceyx erithaca ), also an oriental dwarf fisherman , is an Asian kingfisher .
features
The jungle dwarf fisherman, which only grows up to 14 cm, has a dark blue to black top. This back color differentiates it from the red-backed fisherman , which is also native to Southeast Asia. Its head is orange with a purple tinge. In young animals, the lower part of the body is white with an orange ring and the beak is yellow-orange.
distribution
Its natural range is in South and Southeast Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam). In Singapore it is considered extinct.
Food acquisition
Like most kingfishers of the genus Ceyx , the bird hunts from a perch. Its food source is mainly terrestrial and consists of insects and other invertebrates.
Systematics
Some zoologists regard the redback fisherman only as a color variation of the jungle dwarf fisherman. In Borneo , where both kingfishers occur together, they mate with each other and there are all gradations between the red-purple and the black-blue upper side. There are also intermediate forms on Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula (up to Kuala Lumpur ).
In addition, three subspecies have been described:
- Ceyx erithacus erithacus ( Linnaeus , 1758)
- Ceyx erithacus macrocarus ( Oberholser , 1917)
- Ceyx erithacus motleyi ( Chasen & Kloss , 1929)
