Roman Michailowitsch Dsneladze ( Georgian რომან ძნელაძე , Russian Роман Михайлович Дзнеладзе ; born September 1, 1933 in Tbilisi , † April 11, 1966 in Terdschola , Imeretia / Georgian SSR ) was a Soviet-Georgian wrestler . He won a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman style featherweight at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne .

Career

Roman Dzneladze came from Tbilisi , Georgia , where he started wrestling as a teenager . He developed into an excellent wrestler in the Greco-Roman style. His first major success came in 1953 when he finished third in the Soviet featherweight championship behind Artyom Teryan from Armenia and Moscow's Telkov.

In 1956 he surprisingly succeeded in qualifying for the Olympic Games in Melbourne , where he started again in featherweight. With three Seigen he won a bronze medal there . He also defeated the later Olympic champion in this weight class Rauno Mäkinen from Finland . However, defeats to Turkey's Müzahir Sille and Hungary's Imre Polyák prevented an even better placement.

After 1956 Roman Dzneladze could not qualify for any further international championships against the extremely strong competition in the Soviet Union. That's why he soon took up the job of coach. In 1966 he was killed in the car of the former world champion Awtandil Koridze together with the latter.
