Duarte Leite Pereira da Silva (born August 11, 1864 in Porto , Portugal , † September 29, 1950 in Meinedo , Lousada ) was a Portuguese historian , journalist , diplomat and politician . He was finance minister and head of government in his country.

Life

Duarte Leite studied philosophy and mathematics at the University of Coimbra , which he left in 1885. From 1886 to 1911 he taught at the Polytechnic Academy in Porto. At the same time he was editor of the daily newspaper A Pátria and wrote articles for the newspapers O Primeiro de Janeiro and Seara Nova .

In the government of Augusto de Vasconcelos (November 13, 1911 - June 16, 1912) he was finance minister, after de Vasconcelos' resignation he became head of government himself, an office that he held until January 9, 1913.

Duarte Pereira was a member of the Democratic Party .

From 1914 to 1931 he was Portugal's ambassador to Brazil . Even during the Salazar years he remained true to his democratic convictions and was a member of the semi-legal opposition.
