Pancreatic duct

The pancreatic duct ( Latin for "pancreatic duct") one of the ducts, in humans usually the only duct for the exocrine portion of the pancreas ( pancreas ). The ductus pancreaticus is also called Wirsung duct or ductus Wirsungianus after its discoverer Johann Georg Wirsung . According to his own statement, however, his student Moritz Hofmann had previously detected it in a turkey.

The ductus pancreaticus is about 2 mm wide in humans and ends in the anterior duodenum on the papilla duodeni major ( papilla Vateri ). The digestive enzymes formed in the pancreas reach the small intestine via the ductus pancreaticus.

Origin and Comparative Anatomy

The pancreatic duct arises embryonically from the smaller ventral (ventral) pancreatic bud. This is initially in pairs, but the two main rungs unite in mammals to form a duct system. With the rotation of the stomach and the union of the pancreatic systems, the cavity system of the back system of the pancreas is also connected to the pancreatic duct, so that this becomes the sole excretory duct of the organ. This is also the case with other mammals such as cats and sheep .

In horses and dogs , on the other hand, both main ducts are retained, so that the additional pancreatic duct ( ductus pancreaticus accessorius ) is formed in addition to the ductus pancreaticus . This can also occur as a variety in humans .

In pigs and cattle , on the other hand, the excretory duct of the ventral system recedes, so they lack the pancreatic duct. With them, the accessory pancreatic duct becomes the sole outlet duct of the pancreas.
