The accessory pancreatic duct (lat. For "additional pancreatic duct") is one of the ducts for the exocrine portion of the pancreas ( pancreas ). The ductus pancreaticus accessorius is also known as the Santorini duct after its discoverer Giovanni Domenico Santorini . It opens in the anterior duodenum on the papilla duodeni minor . In humans it is only developed as a rare variety .

Origin and Comparative Anatomy

The accessory pancreatic duct arises embryonically from the larger dorsal (dorsal) pancreatic bud. When the stomach rotates and the pancreatic system unites, the duct system in humans, but also cats and sheep , is connected to the duct of the abdominal system of the pancreas, the ductus pancreaticus . The intestinal (proximal) section of the ductus pancreaticus accessorius closes and the opening into the intestine is lost.

In horses and dogs , on the other hand, both main excretory ducts are retained, so that both the pancreatic duct and the accessory pancreatic duct are developed. This can also occur as a variety in humans , usually only in a pancreas divisum .

In pigs and cattle , on the other hand, the duct of the ventral system recedes, so that the accessory pancreatic duct becomes the sole duct of the pancreas.
