Dudum sacrum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The papal bull Dudum sacrum of December 15, 1433 is one of the consistorial bulls with which Pope Eugene IV tried to counteract the conciliarism of the era.

On July 23, 1431, the Council of Basel was opened; but on December 18, 1431, Eugene IV forbade it by the bull Quoniam alto and called a new council to Bologna . This papal appeal was unsuccessful and the Council Fathers stayed in Basel . As a result of this resistance, Eugene IV withdrew his decrees against the Council of Basel with this new bull and recognized the legality of this council. The text of the bull was based in its main features on the proposal of Cardinal Giuliano Cesarini .
