Giuliano Cesarini (* 1398 in Rome , † November 10, 1444 near Varna ) was an Italian canonist , diplomat and cardinal .

Life

Cesarini came from ancient Roman nobility. After studying in Perugia and Bologna , he did his doctorate in Padua in utroque iure . From 1419 to 1422 he taught canon law in Padua. His students included Domenico Capranica and Nikolaus von Kues , who dedicated his main work Docta ignorantia to him. Cardinal Branda Castiglione called him to Rome and chose him to accompany his legation in Germany and Bohemia, to which he set out in March 1422. After his return, Cesarini worked as an auditor of the Roman Rota and chamber auditor at the Curia in Rome.

On May 24, 1426 he became cardinal in pectore , this was published on November 8, 1430 by Martin V , where he was given the title diaconia Sant'Angelo in Pescheria as a cardinal deacon . This Pope gave him the presidium of the Council of Basel in January 1431 . After Martin's death in February, he took part in the 1431 conclave and was confirmed in his office by the new Pope Eugene IV . The council, however, was opened by his deputies while he himself led the crusade against the Hussites , which ended in a crushing defeat at the Battle of Taus . Thereupon Cesarini invited the Hussites to Basel for negotiations. In 1437 he left the council with the papal party. On March 7, 1444 he became Cardinal Bishop of Tusculum . As a papal legate he was sent to Hungary , where he met the young Polish and Hungarian King Władysław III. (Ulászló I.) and Johann Hunyadi won for a crusade against the Turks . On November 10, 1444 Cesarini fell in the Battle of Varna in Bulgaria.
