Alfred A. Strnad
Alfred A. Strnad (born May 4, 1937 in Vienna ; † January 18, 2003 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian historian and professor of modern history at the University of Innsbruck .
Live and act
Alfred A. Strnad was born in 1937 as the son of a business graduate in Vienna and grew up there. He attended elementary school and high school. His youth were overshadowed by National Socialism and the Second World War . After graduating from school, he studied history , art history and philosophy in Vienna . In 1959/1960 Strnad began a three-year training course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna. The subject of his examination was “ The court orchestra of the Austrian sovereigns; Preparatory work for a history of clerical court service in the later Middle Ages. He also was in 1961 at the University of Vienna Dr. phil is doing his doctorate. The topic of his dissertation was Duke Albrecht III. of Austria (1365-1395). A contribution to the history of Austria in the later Middle Ages. “After his doctorate, the then director Leo Santifaller hired him as a fully qualified research assistant at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research. In the following years he became the research assistant of Alphons Lhotsky , who had a great influence on his future scientific work.
Strnad accepted Leo Santifaller's second offer in 1964 and moved to Rome . There he took up a position as a research assistant and later as a civil servant at what was then the Department of Historical Studies at the Austrian Cultural Institute . In his new position he was also responsible for the editorial of the Roman Historical Communications . He used the access to the holdings of the Vatican Secret Archives and the Vatican Library to expand the focus of his research work, which was previously only on Austria, to include European-cultural and spiritual aspects . In this context, he wrote studies on Renaissance humanism and on some of its representatives, including Popes Pius II and Pius III.
On June 1, 1972, he completed his habilitation in the history of modern times at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Innsbruck with Hans Kramer , for which his studies formed the basis. He finally got a job as a professor at the university and held regular lectures in this subject from the winter semester 1972/1973. On August 12, 1976, he officially succeeded Hans Kramer and was a full professor until his death. During this time he was head of the Department for Modern History, was chairman of the Institute for History from 1978 to 1986, and from 1978 was editor of the Innsbruck Historical Studies that he initiated . He also continued to do research.
He was Membro corrispondente dell'Accademia Senese degli Intronati and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for East German Church and Cultural History. On January 18, 2003, he died in a terrible accident in Innsbruck when he came under a burning Christmas tree . He had been married to the historian Katherine Walsh since the summer of 1976 .
