The Río Duerna is an approximately 54 km long tributary of the Río Tuerto in the Spanish province of León in the autonomous region of Castile-León . It is the most important river of the Comarca Maragatería and belongs to the river system (cuenca) of the Duero .

The Río Duerna rises - depending on the available rain or meltwater from several spring streams at an altitude of approx. 1,300 to 1,400  m - in the area of ​​the municipality of Lucillo on the eastern flank of the Montes de León and flows first in a south-easterly direction, later in an easterly direction ; About 1 km north of the town of La Bañesa it flows into the Río Tuerto , which in turn joins the Río Órbigo only about 2.5 km further south-east .

Attractions

The upper course of the river in particular is scenic and popular with anglers; the communities and villages on its banks offer holiday apartments (casas rurales) for rent. Many villages in the Comarca Maragatería still have old pavement as well as houses and churches made of rubble stones.
