Dun Bharpa

Dun Bharpa

Dun Bharpa ( Gaelic Dùn a 'Bhairp ) is a Cairn on Barra , an island of Western Isles in the Highlands in Scotland . Not to be confused with Barpa Langass , another large cairn on North Uist .

About 3500 BC The cairn, which was built in BC, is the best preserved of the "Western Isles" despite the removal of many stones and is around 30.0 m in diameter and five meters high. Despite its misleading name, the Cairn is not a dun ; but set by partially preserved curbs, some of which are three to four meters high. There are several depressions in the cairn that may indicate collapsed chambers, which is why it is also referred to as a “chamberd cairn”. Dun Bharpa, like the similarly large Irish cairns Carn-na-truagh , Heapstown and Knocknarea, has never been examined.

Nearby are the prehistoric structures of Allasdale .
