Dunbar James Douglas, 6th Earl of Selkirk (born April 22, 1809 in London , † April 11, 1885 in St. Mary's Isle, Kirkcudbrightshire ) was a British peer and politician.

Life

He was the only son of Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk , from his marriage to Jean Wedderburn-Colville. As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Daer during his lifetime . He was still a minor when he inherited his Scottish nobility titles as 6th Earl of Selkirk and 6th Lord Daer and Shortcleugh when his father died in 1820 .

He attended from 1823 to 1828, the Eton College and then began studying at Christ Church College of Oxford University , where he in 1830 the completion of a Bachelor of Arts in 1834 and the one Master of Arts acquired. In January 1831 he was accepted as a Fellow in the Royal Society .

On June 3, 1831 he was elected as a Scottish representative peer in the British House of Lords and belonged to the parliamentary group of the Conservative Party . He was re-elected several times and held the mandate until his death. In 1844 he was made Lord Lieutenant of Kirkcudbrightshire for life and in 1852 and from 1858 to 1859 he also held the state office of Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland .

On June 29, 1878, at the age of 69, he married Cecily Louisa Gray-Egerton († 1920), daughter of Sir Philip Gray-Egerton, 10th Baronet . The marriage remained childless.

When he died in 1885, his titles of nobility fell to his distant relative Charles Douglas-Hamilton , younger brother of William Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton .
