history

Originally, Dundee was a farm owned by Peter Smith. He named it in 1882 after his Scottish hometown Dundee . The area was visited early on by traders and fortune hunters for its coal deposits.

After finding a substantial coal deposit, Smith founded the Dundee Coal Company . He listed them on the London Stock Exchange as early as 1899 . Dundee soon developed into a rapidly growing city with stately estates, including the first theater north of what was then Port Natal, now Durban . Seven roads leading into the hinterland and the coast crossed in Dundee, which led many traders from among the Indian immigrants to settle in the region.

economy

The city is surrounded by coal mines. Based on this, it is referred to in English as "Coalopolis".

Most of the agricultural activity around Dundee is limited to raising livestock for milk production.
