Dungal from Bobbio

Dungal von Bobbio ( bl. 811-828) was an Irish monk , teacher, astronomer and poet . He lived in the Abbey of Saint-Denis , in Pavia and Bobbio . It is believed that he is identical to the writer Hibernicus exul .

Life

Dungal was born in Ireland towards the end of the 8th century . He may have received his education in Bangor , Wales . He left the British Isles around the year 800. In 811 he lived in the Abbey of Saint-Denis near Paris . A letter from Alcuin seems to indicate that he was a bishop .

Observations of the solar eclipse

In a letter to Charlemagne , he answered the question of why there were two solar eclipses in 810 . He draws on the teachings of Macrobius , Pliny and other ancient authors. his letter reveals a knowledge "that goes far beyond the knowledge of his time."

Next life

Dungal wrote a poem on Wisdom and the Seven Liberal Arts . In 823 he is mentioned in a chapter by Lothair . In 825 he was appointed Master of the Pavia School by imperial decree. In 827 or 828 he defended the position of admirer of images against Claudius of Turin and wrote a defense of his teachings after a request from Louis the Pious .

Death and legacy

Dungal died after 827 or 828, probably in Bobbio Abbey . He left his valuable library with 27 volumes to the abbey. The Bangor antiphonary may have come from his possession.
