Dunino is a village in the East Neuk region of the Scottish Unitary Authority Fife . It is six kilometers southeast of the nearest town, St Andrews , and eight kilometers from the fishing village of Anstruther . Dunino is a small village with no shops and a primary school.
In the woods behind the Dunino Church is a pre-Christian sacred site, Dunino Den , which consists of an "altar stone", a well and an ancient footprint carved into the rock overlooking a small stream. The well that stands on top of the "cave" is believed to have been used by druids for human sacrifice, although it is more likely that it was simply worshiped as a natural wonder. Stairs carved into the cliff during the pagan era lead down into the cave . Here, Celtic crosses and symbols from modern and ancient devotees were carved into the rock walls. The pagan pilgrims who venture to this place leave offerings of all kinds that hang from the trees (see Clootie Well ) and stuck in crevices in the cliffs, from coins to ribbons to panties.
