Dunkeswell Abbey (Dunkeswella) is a former Cistercian abbey near the village of Dunkeswell and about 10 km north-northwest of Honiton in Devon in England .

history

The monastery was founded in 1201 by the royal official William Brewer as a daughter monastery of Forde Abbey and equipped with properties in eastern Devon. It thus belonged to the filiation of Cîteaux . The founder himself entered the monastery in 1224, two years before his death. Brewer's son William Brewer added to the facilities of the monastery. In the Valor Ecclesiasticus, the annual income in 1535 was set at 294 pounds. The abbey was therefore not dissolved until the second wave of dissolution in 1539. Lord Russell received the monastery property. Most of the plant was soon demolished. However, some of the buildings in the enclosure were still inhabited until the 19th century. Excavations took place in 1841 and 1913.

Buildings and plant

The complex essentially corresponded to the Bernardine plan with a cross-shaped church in the north, rectangular closed in the east, and the enclosure south (right) of the church. Part of the gatehouse in the west and ruinous areas of the western building of the enclosure have been preserved. The parish chapel, built in 1842 at the instigation of the Simcoe family, is located in the area of the nave of the monastery church; Materials from the monastery were used to build it, including a 13th century paving.
