Dutch Flat (formerly: Dutch Charlie's Flat ) is a census-designated place northeast of Sacramento in Placer County , California . The place was founded in the spring of 1851 by the German immigrants Joseph and Charles Dornbach during the California gold rush and was one of the gold rush towns in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in the second half of the 19th century . The part of the name "Dutch" (actually: "Dutch") comes from the fact that the Americans in the 19th century sometimes used the word "Dutch" to refer to Germans.
Between 1854 and 1882, Dutch Flat was an important site for hydraulic mining, where the ores are extracted from the mountain using water power. In 1860, the place had the largest number of voters in Placer County and was also home to around 2,000 Chinese miners.
The place developed back from a town to a village after the interim ban on hydraulic mining in 1884 and was added to the official list of cultural monuments in California in 1948 as the California Historical Landmark . Today a gold rush museum, the Dutch Flat Hotel from 1852 and an antique shop are of major tourist interest .
