Edred John Henry Corner

Edred John Henry Corner , also EJH Corner , (born January 12, 1906 in London , † September 14, 1996 in Cambridge ) was a British botanist , mycologist and wood specialist (focus on Moraceae ). Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Corner ".

Life

Edred John Henry Corner was born in 1906 in London to the physician Edred Moss Corner (1873-1950) and his wife Henrietta Henderson Corner (1872-1966). In Cambridge he studied botany at Sidney Sussex College . From 1926 to 1946 he was director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens . Between 1965 and 1973 he was a professor at Cambridge University . One of his students was David Mabberley , who dedicated an article to his teacher.

Corner was a member of the Royal Society . For his services in biology, he received several awards, including several science awards from the Royal Society. In 1985 he was the first to receive the International Biology Prize from the Japanese Society for the Advancement of Science. About 30 types of plants were named after him.

Corner was married twice: to Sheila Kavanagh and, after his divorce, to Helga Dinesen. His marriages resulted in a son and two daughters. Corner died in Cambridge in 1996 at the age of 90.
