EL Canum Venaticorum is a binary star system consisting of a relatively massive main sequence star of the spectral class A1 and a post-AGB star at a distance of about 850  light years . It is the prototype of the so-called EL Canum Venaticorum stars , which belong to the eclipsed stars .

There is a presumption that the smaller companion was originally the massive star and that the two stars switched roles through mass transfer . According to today's knowledge, this theory best explains why the companion is already in this late stage of development despite its low mass .
