The EMD F7 is a series of diesel-electric locomotives from the US locomotive manufacturer General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD). They represent the numerically strongest sub -series of the EMD F series .
Originally designed as freight locomotives , some examples were also used in passenger train service. Among other things, they pulled the legendary El Capitan train on the Santa Fe and the Empire Builder on the Great Northern Railway .
A total of 2,366 machines with a driver's cab (A units) and 1,483 B units without a driver's cab were built. Until the construction of the EMD SD40-2 from 1972 onwards , the F7 was the diesel locomotive series with the highest numbers in North America .
construction
Technically, the F7 was based on the previous F3 series . Changes mainly affected the electrical equipment. So the last F3 can hardly be distinguished from the first F7.
The EMD F7 had a self-supporting locomotive body . A driver's cab was arranged at the front of the A units . Behind it was the engine room with the traction generator , which supplied the direct current for the traction motors , and the EMD 567B diesel engine . The type designation EMD 567 means that the engine had a displacement of 567 cubic inches (approx. 9.3 liters) per cylinder . The vehicles of the F-series had engines with 16 cylinders , while the locomotives of the EMD E-series had two engines with 12 cylinders each. The exhaust gases from each 8 cylinders were led to the outside via an exhaust pipe.
The battery box and the fuel tank were located between the bogies . It held 4,542 liters of diesel fuel .
equipment
At the customer's request, the machines were delivered with additional equipment. Many models with a dynamic brake supplied (Dynamic Brake). The traction motors are switched to generator mode. As a result, the locomotive's kinetic energy is first converted into electrical energy and then into heat via braking resistors . This additional braking effect made it possible to reduce the wear on the mechanical brake . The locomotives equipped in this way had an additional roof fan to dissipate the heat to the environment. This initially had a diameter of 36 "(914 mm) and was later enlarged to 48" (1,219 mm).
The F7 locomotives were equipped with a small boiler for train heating . This made it possible to use it in front of passenger trains. However, EMD advertised the F series as a freight locomotive. The four-axle EMD FP7 or the six-axle E-series, which were built at the same time, were intended for passenger trains. These had steam boilers with a significantly larger capacity.
variants
During the construction period, EMD implemented some detail improvements on the machines. Based on these differences, railway enthusiasts made a division into production phases, but this representation has never been confirmed by EMD.
The first units of the F7 had horizontal openings in the upper fan belt. Four more ventilation openings with horizontal grilles were arranged in the middle of the vehicle.
Between March 1951 and October 1951, the upper ventilation openings got a vertical grill. The cab doors were rounded off in the corners and the side windows were enlarged.
Since February 1952, the inner ventilation grilles in the center of the vehicle were supplied with vertical openings. The last machines also had no overhang at the rear of the vehicle.
