EXID ( Hangeul : 이 엑스 아이디 ) is a South Korean girl group consisting of five members that was founded by AB Entertainment in 2011 and has been under contract with Banana Culture Entertainment since June 2014 .

Band history

2011: Casting of the girl group

In May 2011, the music producer Shinsadong Tiger and the company AB Entertainment (today: Gamgak Entertainment) cast some up-and-coming artists from JYP Entertainment to form a new girl group. Yuji was the first to join AB Entertainment's new girl group as JYP's own girl group, which consisted of Yuji, Hani, Song Ji-eun (from girl group Secret ), and Hyolyn (from girl group Sistar ), even before hers Debut failed. Yuji got in touch with up-and-coming JYP artists Hani, Haeryeong, and Junghwa to take part in the casting of AB's new girl group, and the three were then accepted into the girl group. The fifth band member became LE, an underground rapper and songwriter discovered by the music producer Shinsadong, who performed under the name Elly. Dami, who was already working as a young artist at AB, became the sixth and last member of the music group. Originally the girl group was called "WT", an acronym for "Who's That". A few months before their debut, the band changed their name to "EXID", an acronym for "Exceed in Dream". In December 2011 LE worked on Huh Gak's single Whenever You Play That Song , which was a hit single in the Korean single charts. EXID was supposed to have its debut in January 2012, but it had to be postponed by a month to February because LE sustained a leg injury during rehearsals.

2012: Debut of the band, lineup changes, EP Hippity Hop and single Every Night

On February 3, 2012, AB announced that EXID's debut would be the single Whoz That Girl . Video teasers showing solo performances by various group members were subsequently published online.

EXID's first download single was Holla on February 16, 2012 . The girl group made its first appearance on the TV show M! Countdown . She then appeared in Music Core and Inkigayo . Her debut song Whoz That Girl topped the Gaon Chart 36 and sold 840,000 downloads.

In April 2012, AB Entertainment announced that founding members Yuji, Dami, and Haeryeong were leaving EXID. AB Entertainment announced in its press release that Yuji and Dami would leave the band to focus on their studies, while Haeryeong wanted to pursue an acting career. They were replaced by Solji, a former member of the Musikdous 2NB, and Hyelin, who was originally intended to be a member of EXID, but was not considered.

With the new members EXID made their comeback in August 2012 with the single I Feel Good and released their first EP Hippity Hop . Hippity Hop debuted at number 13 on the Gaon Albums chart and sold 1,500 copies. On October 2, 2012, the new download single Every Night came out, an alternate version of LE's self-written song Phone Call , which was included on EXID's debut EP. Every Night debuted at number 43 on the Gaon Singles Chart and sold 105,000 downloads.

On October 11, 2012, EXID released their song Hey Boy as part of the soundtrack for MBC's sitcom, The Thousandth Man . The song was the female version of B1A4's main title track, Hey Girl . Music producer Shinsadong Tiger rearranged the reggae-style song to allow a different approach to the original version of B1A4.

On November 30, 2012 it was announced that EXID, together with Big Star and D-Unit, are working on a joint album that will be released in addition to a special concert at the end of the year. The concert was titled "The Bugs Show Vol. 1" on December 22, 2012 at the V-Hall in Hongdae in Seoul, South Korea . On December 6th 2012 EXID won the Rookie Award of the 20th Korea Culture & Entertainment Awards. In their acceptance speech the girl group said: "We are so happy and honored that we have received such a significant award. We will continue to do our best and grow." ("We are so happy and honored to receive such a meaningful award." We will continue to try our best and grow. ")

2013-January 2015: Dasoni , Up & Down and increasing popularity

On February 8, 2013 EXID released the single Up & Down from the soundtrack to the television series Don-ui Hwasin and it was announced that Hani and Solji would participate outside of EXID in an independent band called Dasoni . Dasoni released her debut single Goodbye on February 15, 2013, which also included the song Said So Often .

In June 2014 it was announced that the members had signed an exclusive deal with Yedang Entertainment and were preparing their comeback with Shinsadong Tiger, who would take over the production of their album.

On August 24, 2014, the girl group EXID had their comeback appearance in the Ilchi Art Hall, where they performed their new song Up & Down . The song was released on August 27, 2014 and initially had poor chart placement and did not make it into the top 100 of the Gaon Digital Charts; the top spot was 94. However, the song began to gain popularity in late November 2014 when a fan video by Hani showing her performing the song went viral on South Korean social networks. Her fan video had been viewed more than 15 million times by mid-December 2014. That resulted in the song returning to the charts, making it to the top 10 and eventually topping the charts. Due to the success, EXID went to several music shows to promote Up and Down . The song was subsequently voted for first place on Show! Music Core , The Music Trend and M Countdown were nominated, the latter of which it won on January 8, 2015. That was the first award with the M Countdown for EXID. On January 9, 2015, the band won their first Public Broadcast Music Program Award from KBS's Music Bank . After the Music Bank a gain in the victory at followed Inkigayo of SBS on January 11, 2015.

After January 2015: Ah Yeah

On April 6, 2015, Yedang Entertainment released a music video teaser for EXID's theme song Ah Yeah from their second mini album, which continues their popular upbeat and sexy concept. The full music video was first shown on April 13, 2015. The group had their own television show, EXID's Showtime ( MBC ).

  • Heo Solji , or Solji for short (Hangeul: 솔지 , born January 10, 1989) was a member of the music duo 2NB from 2006 to 2012 together with Gabin, who is now part of the girl group Blady , and published solo singles in 2008. She was EXID's voice trainer before joining the band.
  • LE (Hangeul: 엘리 , * as Ahn Hyo-jin 안효진 December 10, 1991) was a former member of the underground rap crew Jiggy Fellaz under the name Elly. Prior to EXID's debut, she performed on Whenever You Play That Song , a duet with Huh Gak . She has worked with a number of artists, including Hyuna and Im Chang-jung . In 2013, she took part in the rap talent show Show Me the Money 2 on South Korean television.
  • Hani (Hangeul: 하니 , * as Ahn Hee-yeon 안희연 May 1, 1992) was a junior artist at JYP Entertainment during her first year at high school , but was not considered after a year. In 2015, Hani appeared in several episodes of the South Korean variety shows Off to School and Match Made in Heaven Returns , and is part of the cast of the variety show Crime Scene 2 . She also hosted the KBS2 fashion show A Style for You and appeared in the music video for Mad Clown 's song "Fire".
  • Seo Hyelin (Hangeul: 서혜린 ), Hyelin for short (Hangeul: 혜린 , * 23 August 1993) In 2011 she took part in the talent show Superstar K3 and made it from auditions to "SuperWeek".
  • Park Junghwa (Hangeul: 박정화 ), Junghwa for short (Hangeul: 정화 , born May 8, 1995) is a former up-and-coming artist from JYP Entertainment . Before joining EXID, she appeared in the music videos for Tell Me by Wonder Girls and Whenever You Play That Song by Huh Gak and LE. In 2015 she appeared in several episodes of MBC Every1s Match Made in Heaven Returns .

Their single Up & Down was number one on the South Korean charts in January 2015 . The single Ah Yeah reached number 2 on the South Korean charts in 2015.
