Earl Francis Lloyd (born April 3, 1928 in Alexandria , Virginia , † February 26, 2015 in Crossville , Tennessee ) was an American basketball player. On October 31, 1950 he was used as the first African American in a game of the NBA professional league.
career
Depending on the definition, he can be called the first black in the NBA. When the league opened to black players in 1950, Chuck Cooper was the first to be drafted , Nathaniel Clifton was the first to sign a contract with an NBA team, and Earl Lloyd was the first to play, as his team's season was a day earlier started as for Cooper and four days earlier than for Clifton. His first team were the Washington Capitols , for which he was only used seven times.
In 1955 , Lloyd became NBA champion with the Syracuse Nationals as a achiever. He later became the NBA's first black assistant coach and eventually the Detroit Pistons' first black head coach .
Despite this pioneering position, he has only recently received official recognition. In February 2001 a youth basketball camp was inaugurated in his hometown of Alexandria and both the Mayor of Alexandria and the Governor of Virginia declared February 9, 2001 "Earl Lloyd Day".
In 2003, Loyd was finally inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for career achievement as a player .
