Earle R. Caley

Earle Radcliffe Caley (born May 14, 1900 in Cleveland , † February 1984 ibid) was an American chemist and chemical historian.

Caley studied chemistry at the Case Institute of Technology and Baldwin Wallace College with a bachelor's degree in 1923, received his master's degree from Ohio State University in 1925 , where he studied analytical chemistry with Charles W. Foulk in 1928 with the subject Direct determination of sodium doctorate was. He then went to Princeton University , where he became interested in archeology. In 1937 he was involved as a chemist in the excavation in the Agora in Athens. During World War II he was an industrial chemist at Wallace Laboratories in New Brunswick (New Jersey) . In 1946 he became an associate professor and soon afterwards a professor at Ohio State University. In 1970 he retired.

In addition to research in analytical chemistry ( alkali and alkaline earth metals , use of hydrogen iodide in the analysis of poorly soluble compounds), he applied his knowledge to the analysis of ancient coins, statues, glass and pigments from the Mediterranean and other parts of the world.

In 1966 he received the Dexter Award and he received the John Frederick Lewis Prize from the American Philosophical Society. In 1967 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Baldwin Wallace College.
