The Gmina Kętrzyn ( German  rural community Rastenburg ) is a rural community in the powiat Kętrzyński ( Rastenburg district ) within the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . The official seat is in the city ​​of Kętrzyn , which is not itself part of the rural municipality.

Geographical location

The Gmina Kętrzyn is located in the northeastern Voivodeship Warmia-Masuria on the northwestern edge of the Masurian Lake District ( Pojezierze Mazurskie in Polish ) in the former East Prussia and encloses the area of ​​the district town of Kętrzyn (Rastenburg) . The Guber flows through the municipality from the south-east to the north-west on its 73-kilometer path from Lake Guber (Jezioro Guber in Polish) to Sępopol (Schippenbeil) , where it flows into the Alley (Łyna in Polish). The Deine (Polish Dajna) flows from the southwest into the municipality, where it ends at Biedaszki (Groß Neuhof) in the Guber.

history

Place name

The name of the rural parish is identical to that of the township of Kętrzyn, which, however, does not belong to it. It is named after the Polish nationalist historian Wojciech Kętrzyński , who was originally called Adalbert von Winkler and was the son of a Prussian gendarme. He lived from 1838 to 1918. His special commitment was the Polish Masuria .

With the three provincial roads DW 591 , DW 592 and DW 594 , the rural community is very well connected to the neighboring regions. A relatively well-developed network of secondary roads ensures convenient connections to the localities both internally and externally.

The Głomno – Białystok railway runs through the municipality , and before 1945 even connected Königsberg (Prussia) with Brest-Litowsk . The Gmina Kętrzyn is connected to this route with the Linkowo (Schrengen) , Nowy Młyn (Neumühl) and Martiany (Mertenheim) train stations . From 1907 to 2008 there was also a connection to the Kętrzyn – Węgorzewo (Rastenburg – Angerburg) railway via the Karolewo (Carlshof) , Czerniki (Schwarzstein) and Gierłoż (Görlitz) railway stations , which, however, has ceased regular operations.
