Gałwuny (German Groß Galbuhnen ) is a village in Poland in the rural municipality of Kętrzyn (Rastenburg) , Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .

Geographical location

Gałwuny is located three kilometers northwest of Kętrzyn. The state border with Kaliningrad Oblast runs about 26 kilometers north of the village .

history

The place was mentioned in 1419 as Galwonen and is derived from the Prussian “galwa” (head, head), but describes the location in a bulge in a pond or in an old river bed. Groß Galbuhnen was actually founded by a locator in 1422, but the Prussian settlement existed some time before that. In 1533 the place was called Groß Galbun, from 1689 Groß Galbuhnen. This year there were two taverns in the place, which took up nine Hufen . The residents had to pay eleven bushels of rye , wheat and barley and 15 bushels of oats . The settlement belonged to the parish of St. George in Kętrzyn. In the 18th century a school was founded in the village.

In January 1945 the Red Army invaded the village and the settlement became part of Poland as a result of World War II . In 1954, Gałwuny became the seat of a Gromada with Julian Ślęzak as director. The Gromada was dissolved again in 1957. 1973 Gałwuny became the seat of a Schulzenamt (sołectwo) with three localities. The Schulzenamt was in turn part of the Kętrzyn community. Today (2006) the localities Borki (Borken) , Kaskajmy (Groß Köskeim) , Katkajmy (Kattkeim) , Olchowo (Erlenhof) and Ostry Róg (Scharfenort) belong to the Schulzenamt .

Population development

In 1785 Groß Galbuhnen had 20 houses, in 1818 there were two fewer with 132 inhabitants. In 1939 the place had 381 inhabitants and in 1970 there were 225.

traffic

The provincial road 592 runs through the village . In the south this ends in the district town of Kętrzyn, about three kilometers away. In the northwest it crosses the Voivodship Road 590, which leads to Reszel (Rößel) and Korsze (Korschen) for about 15 kilometers . The 592 ends in Bartoszyce (Bartenstein) . The closest Polish international airport is Gdansk Lech Wałęsa Airport , while the more important Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport is around 200 kilometers away. The Russian airport Kaliningrad is about 90 kilometers north.
