Gierłoż (German Görlitz ) is a village in Poland in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . It belongs to the Gmina Kętrzyn (rural community Rastenburg ) and is administratively assigned to the Schulzenamt Czerniki .

geography

The village is located in northern Poland, about 30 kilometers south of the border with Kaliningrad Oblast in the former German East Prussia . Kętrzyn (Rastenburg) is about eight kilometers to the west.

history

The village was laid out in 1353 by Commander Wolfgang von Sauer . In the midst of moors and lakes, von Sauer set up a hunting estate here, with which the nearby fortress of the Teutonic Order in Rastenburg (Kętrzyn) was supplied with game. When the plague raged in Prussia in 1710 , seven people died in the still small town of Görlitz.

In 1907 it was connected to the rail network. After the First World War , the village was a popular destination for the residents of Rastenburg. This is how weekend houses , restaurants and guest houses were built here . In 1940, during the Second World War , work began on the Wolfsschanze headquarters in the immediate vicinity of the village . In January 1945 the Red Army marched into the village. The remains of Wolfsschanze were made accessible to tourists in 1959 . Gierłoż was assigned to the Schulzenamt Czerniki in 1973 .

In 1785 there were four houses in the village. In 1817 there were three in which 18 people lived. In 1970 48 people lived here, in 2000 there were 24.
