participation

Travelers aged 12 and over from the EU , the EEA and Switzerland can use the system without further registration, provided they have a biometric passport or a German identity card. In addition, citizens of some other countries (currently Hong Kong , United States and South Korea ) are entitled to use the automated border control system, provided they register for the EasyPASS-RTP (Registered Traveler Program). In return, Germans are entitled to participate in the comparable programs Global Entry , e-Channel and SES .

function

EasyPASS with one user at the document
reader

The system uses the data stored electronically in the passport for control purposes and carries out a biometric comparison of the face with the photo stored in the passport to establish identity .

For this purpose, the travelers place their travel document on the document reader located at the entrance of the control gate, which reads the electronic data from the travel document and carries out an authenticity check. The traveler then enters the lock and the biometric comparison of the face with the passport photo is carried out by means of a camera.

If the travel document is genuine and the biometric comparison has been carried out successfully, the exit opens and the border control is over. Otherwise, you will be escorted to a border police officer of the federal police.

The border control with EasyPASS ideally takes less than 18 seconds and thus speeds up border control. This is made possible by the parallel operation of up to six eGates , because significantly more control capacities are available for travelers.

technology

The document readers installed at the entrance to the lock check the optical and electronic security features of the travel documents on the basis of the technical guideline TR-03135 of the Federal Office for Information Security. For this purpose, the necessary certificates for access to the electronic storage media of the passport are managed via a Terminal Control Center (TCC) . The TCC performs all cryptographic functions and key management for the connected eGates. These processes run completely in the background.

An intelligent camera system compares the facial image with the passport photo. For this one is face recognition software used.

The eGates also have an "innovative background management system" with which all eGates can be centrally controlled and configured. The central interface in the eGates is ensured by the middleware Biomiddle.

A monitoring system is available to the border control officers for an eGate configuration. This can be used to monitor the processes in the eGates and the results of the biometric verification.

The Federal Police currently operates eGates at Frankfurt , Berlin-Tegel , Berlin-Schönefeld, Düsseldorf , Hamburg , Cologne / Bonn and Munich airports . Thus, there are currently more than 214 such control gates available at German airports.

On August 22, 2013, after completion of the award procedure, the corresponding contract was signed with the consortium partners Bundesdruckerei GmbH and Secunet Security Networks AG .
