Eberhard Harzer

Eberhard Harzer SOCist (* as Josef Harzer May 21, 1887 in Zwittermühl ; † November 2, 1949 in Altötting ) was abbot of Osek Monastery from 1943 to 1949 .

Life

He was born as the son of the musician Josef Harzer and the single lace maker Anna Heinzl in house No. 9 in Zwittermühl in the Bohemian Ore Mountains and was baptized Josef on May 22nd, 1887 .

Harzer joined the Cistercian monastery in Osek in 1908 and was ordained a priest in 1913. Then he was a pastor and catechist at the middle school in Maria Ratschitz and high school professor in Brüx .

Elected abbot during the Second World War in 1943, he was interned with the German Bohemian monks (including Dionysius Franz Heger ) in 1945 and expelled to Austria in 1946 . The attempt to gain a foothold with some of Osek's monks in the former Raitenhaslach monastery in Upper Bavaria ended with his death in 1949. He was buried in front of the portal of the monastery church in Raitenhaslach .
