"Sect children from Lonnerstadt"

In October 2012, Irlinger came under criticism as district administrator due to a WDR documentary by Beate Greindl about sect children in Lonnerstadt. Irlinger was accused of having done too little under his supervision for children whose parents had come under the influence of a “guru”. In an earlier case, a child almost starved to death because the youth welfare office under Irlinger had not intervened either. At a press conference on October 31, 2012, Irlinger tried to justify his (non) action. But the criticism did not end. A citizens' initiative “Save the sect children” was founded and organized vigils. In the end, the Erlangen family court contradicted Irlinger's assessment with its judgment of July 5, 2013, in that it withdrew large parts of the parents' custody and removed the children from the family. The "Süddeutsche Zeitung" then commented: "And what is really bad is a district administrator who does not find a discussion about the work of the office necessary after such a slap by a court."
