Eberhard Mund

Eberhard Mund (born October 1, 1940 ) is a former German rower and rowing trainer.

Life

In 1958, Mund was second in the rowing championship of the German Democratic Republic in a four-man team with the TSC Oberschöneweide team . With the eighth of SC Wissenschaft DHfK Leipzig he was GDR champion in 1962 and third in 1966. In 1965 and 1966 he also won the bronze medal in the four without a helmsman. He completed his studies at the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig in 1965 with the thesis “On the problem of effective levers in rowing”.

Mund worked as a trainer at SC Chemie Halle , Dynamo Berlin and the GDR national team. His protégés included Detlef Carell (junior world champion), Uwe Heppner (Olympic and world champion), Wolfgang Hönig (world champion), Jürgen Pfeiffer (world champion), Rüdiger Reiche (Olympic and world champion) and Gerd Uebeler (world champion).

From the end of 1990 he worked in France and became director of the French national rowing team. He stayed in office until 2002. He was credited with the boom in French rowing, and under his leadership French athletes won medals at the Olympic Games and world championships. In 2019 he was awarded the “Gloires du Sport” award in France. After leaving the French Association, Mund was a consultant for the Swiss Rowing Association.

In 1995, Mund sued the doping fighter Brigitte Berendonk , who had linked him to a doping case in France. Berendonk was found guilty of “public discrimination against Eberhard Mund” by a French court and sentenced to a fine and a symbolic payment of one franc compensation to Mund.
