Eberhard Schmidt (political scientist)

Eberhard Schmidt (born June 26, 1939 in Berlin ) is a German political scientist.

Live and act

After studying in Tübingen and Bonn (German, history, philosophy) and in Frankfurt am Main and Marburg (political science and sociology), Schmidt received his doctorate from Wolfgang Abendroth . In 1973 he received a professorship for the history of the labor movement at the University of Marburg . In 1974 he was appointed professor of political science at the newly founded University of Oldenburg , where he taught and researched until his retirement in 2004. His main areas of work were political parties , trade unions and environmental policy . In 2000 he was visiting professor at Shanghai Fudan University .

While still a student, he worked as a press officer on the board of IG Metall (1966–1970). He then became press spokesman and deputy federal chairman of the Young Socialists in Bonn (1970–1973). Schmidt was also politically active in the Offenbach Socialist Office and in various alternative projects in Oldenburg.

He lives in Bremen with his wife from Sri Lanka and two adopted children and dedicates himself to writing in retirement.

Schmidt has been the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung's liaison professor since 1985 and was the coordinator of the Hattinger Kreis , which from 1990 to 2010 dealt with problems of the modernization of the trade unions in workshops and forums. 1985–1994 he was chairman of the Association for Ecological Economic Research (VÖW), 1990–2000 founding member of the research network IRENE (Industrial Relations and the Environment Europe), 1999–2007 member of the 4th and 5th Lower Saxony Government Commission, 1999–2007 chairman of the Environment Committee of the DGB Lower Saxony-Bremen-Saxony-Anhalt, 1999–2004 deputy chairman of the Lower Saxony Environmental Foundation. In 2019 a biography on the person and work of the painter Franz Radziwill (1895–1983) was published.
