Eberhard Serauky

Eberhard Serauky (born September 11, 1940 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German orientalist .

Life

Eberhard Serauky passed his Abitur in 1959 and began studying Oriental Studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in the same year . In 1964 he finished his studies and became a research assistant at the Institute for Orient Research of the German Academy of Sciences . The doctorate took place in October 1968 with Johann Fück and Manfred Fleischhammer with the thesis The scientific and journalistic activity of Muhammad Kurd 'Alīs in the service of the Arab Renaissance in Syria . After completing his doctorate, Serauky became the main consultant in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR, and in 1974 senior research assistant at the Institute for International Relations of the Academy for Political Science and Law of the GDR in Potsdam-Babelsberg . In 1977 Serauky became a research assistant at the ZIAGA of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , in 1981 senior research assistant at the Near Eastern Institute of the Asian Studies section of the Humboldt University in Berlin (HUB). The PhD B took place in June 1983 with Fleischhammer, Horst Grienig and Erika Endesfelder with the thesis The social effectiveness and conceptual world of the Ismāʿīlīja and the Qarmatians in the Yemeni Middle Ages (9th - 13th centuries) . In February 1985 he became a university lecturer in Islamic Studies at the HUB. Serauky has been teaching and working at the Ain-Schams University in Cairo and other universities in the Arab world since 1995 .

He has made a name for himself as an expert in the Arab-Islamic area, which he examines using political-sociological criteria and where he criticizes the state policies of these countries as well as Islamism.
