ISO 6937
ISO 6937 is a variable length character encoding and ISO standard that was first published in 1983. It covers most of the European languages with Latin script. The standard was last updated in 2009. ISO 6937 was used by Teletex . Extended by the € symbol (at position A4 hex ), ISO 6937 is one of the possible text encodings for DVB .
ISO 6937 encodes the multitude of accented characters with two bytes, whereby the first byte represents the diacritical mark and the second byte the character at which the diacritical is to be positioned. The possible combinations are precisely defined, i.e. not arbitrary.
The following table shows the repertoire of ISO 6937. Blue fields represent diacritical marks, green fields unused code points. The first 128 characters are identical to ASCII .
