Eberhard Stammel

Eberhard Stammel (born September 19, 1833 in Düren , † January 1906 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

His parents were the small trader Franz Stammel and Theresia Johanna, née Brauweiler. Eberhard Stammel studied from 1847 to 1852 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he trained first as a history painter and then as a portrait painter , mainly under Karl Ferdinand Sohn . He went on numerous study trips through Germany, the Netherlands and Paris. Stammel stayed in Düsseldorf until his death in 1906. Most recently he lived there in the house at Jägerhofstrasse 4. Stammel was a member of the artists' association Malkasten .

Stammel's work consists mainly of genre pictures in which he portrayed the life of medium-sized society, citizens and craftsmen. His works were exhibited regularly in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Munich, often bought in raffles in art associations and shown as reproductions (wood engravings) in numerous magazines. King Wilhelm of Prussia acquired the picture The Bookworm while visiting the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne in 1865 and the painting The Morning after the Feast at the Berlin art exhibition in 1866 . Most of his paintings came to the USA through the American art trade .
