The Ebert-Erzberger-Rathenau-Mahnmal is a memorial designed by Justus Haarmann in the city of Osnabrück . It was built in honor of the leading politicians of the Weimar Republic Friedrich Ebert , Matthias Erzberger and Walther Rathenau by the Osnabrück branch of the Reichsbanner Black-Red-Gold . The memorial located between today's Erich-Maria-Remarque-Ring and the Herrenteichswall is a newly built copy of the original memorial, which was destroyed by the National Socialists in 1933 .

Original monument

The idea of erecting the monument was initiated by the Osnabrück branch of the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold after the three politicians of the Weimar coalition died or were murdered. A preferred location on the wall was refused because many council members were anti-republican.

A location was finally found opposite the confluence of Karlsstrasse (today Nonnenpfad) on Herrenteichswall. Justus Haarmann even found the words of praise for the location: “You are not removed from modern life, you are, so to speak, still in the middle of it. The square (...) is ideally suited because it is surrounded by traffic and yet withdrawn from it. "

The monument, which is abstract in the Bauhaus style, was designed by the architect Justus Haarmann (1884–1968), a son of the hut director August Haarmann . Even before the foundation stone was laid on July 1, 1928, the base was damaged by unknown people. During the laying of the foundation stone, at which 150 supporters of the Reich banner were present, the speakers were repeatedly disturbed by interjections from the National Socialist camp.

The inauguration of the monument on July 29, 1928 took place amid numerous protests by opponents of the Weimar Republic, especially from right-wing conservative and German national circles. The inaugural speech was given by the SPD member of the Reichstag and General Secretary Hans Vogel from Berlin.

On 12 May 1933, a request for urgency was to be demolished in the newly elected citizens superintendent introduced -Kollegium. This decided the immediate demolition, which SA men carried out on May 15, 1933. So the monument disappeared from the cityscape after less than five years.

Not only did the appreciation of the three “republican” politicians play a role as the ground for the demolition, but also the design language of the Bauhaus, which is seen as “ degenerate ” and is reflected in the memorial. The decision of the municipal authorities was justified with the incompatibility of the monument with an honorary citizenship of Adolf Hitler and Paul von Hindenburg . The resolution should also be understood as an ideological precautionary measure and warning to potential opponents of the regime.

Rebuilding

In 1980 the CDU parliamentary group submitted an application to the city council to rebuild the monument. The motion was accepted unanimously and with great approval. In 1983 the monument was rebuilt based on the historical model. A renovation took place in 2000.
