August Haarmann was the son of the baker and grocer Johann Heinrich Haarmann gen. Kruse (1812-1875) and Wilhelmine Anna Haarmann gen. Kruse born Thomas (1809-1878). After attending the trade school in Bochum , he first worked in the mining industry for several years in order to be able to use the savings to finance a degree at the Royal Trade Institute in Berlin .

He got his first job at a steel and rail rolling mill in Steele . There he was already working on improving the rail rolling process. Because of his achievements, he became director of the Henrichshütte in Hattingen in 1870 . In 1872 he switched to the Osnabrück iron and steel works as director . These came to the Georgs-Marien-Bergwerks- und Hüttenverein (GMBHV), where he was promoted to general director. In 1911 he resigned from this office. His son Allan Haarmann (1872–1953) also made a career in the management of the GMBHV.

August Haarmann was also professionally committed beyond the company, e.g. B. as a founding and board member of the Association of German Ironworkers . From 1889 he was president of the Osnabrück Chamber of Commerce . He was also active in local politics as a senator for the city of Osnabrück and a member of the Citizens' College. A fountain donated by him in Osnabrück, a memorial for miners, is named after him.

Haarmann was mainly concerned with improving the railway superstructure . Various forms of rails (e.g. Haarmann's sleeper rail and Haarmann's twin and triple rails composed of two to three individual profiles ), steel sleepers and different types of superstructure can be traced back to him.

He donated the study collection he had created on the history of the railway superstructure to the Transport and Construction Museum in Berlin, where it had been presented as a track museum since December 1911 .

Haarmann was buried in the family grave on the Hasefriedhof in Osnabrück .
