Echinomastus erectocentrus is a species of plant in the genus Echinomastus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Foreign language trivial names are "Acuña Cactus", "Needle-Spined Pineapple Cactus", "Pineapple Cactus", "Purple-Spined Viznagita" and "Red Pineapple Cactus".

Echinomastus erectocentrus grows individually with egg-shaped to somewhat cylindrical, bluish-green shoots that reach heights of 10 to 37 centimeters with a diameter of 7.5 to 12 centimeters. There are 15 to 21 distinct ribs , which are divided into 6 to 12 millimeter long cusps . The 1 to 4 round, straight or slightly curved central spines are yellowish to slightly purple in color and have a darker tip. They are 1.2 to 3.5 inches long. The top of them is directed upwards, the bottom downwards. The 11 to 15 radial spines, which are somewhat comb-shaped, are yellowish, straight, round and 1.2 to 2.5 centimeters long.

The short funnel-shaped, pink to orange-pink flowers are 2 to 5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 3.8 to 5 centimeters. The green, dry fruits tear open with a slit and are up to 1 centimeter long.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

The range of Echinomastus erectocentrus extends from the south of the US state Arizona to the north of the Mexican state Sonora . The first description as Echinocactus erectocentrus was in 1896 by John Merle Coulter . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Echinomastus in 1922 . A synonym is Sclerocactus erectocentrus .

Echinomastus erectocentrus is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
