Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Thelocactus rinconensis grows on limestone hills in the Mexican states of Coahuila and Nuevo León in very small populations in limited areas.

It was first described as Echinocactus rinconensis in 1855 by Heinrich Poselger . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Thelocactus in 1923 . There are a lot of invalid double descriptions and recombinations and a multitude of synonyms . Synonyms include Echinocactus lophothele Salm-Dyck (1850) and Echinocactus phymatothelos Poselg. ex Rümpler (1886).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Thelocactus rinconensis subsp. rinconensis ( Poselger ) Britton & Rose :
The nominate form has no radial spines. It has 3 to 5 central spines; Flowers are usually white, sometimes reddish.
  • Thelocactus rinconensis subsp. multicephalus Luethy :
White to pink flowers with a darker central stripe
  • Thelocactus rinconensis subsp. hintonii Luethy :
The first description was made by Adrian Lüthy . Occurs only in a small area west of Rayones. The flowers are mainly yellow. The subspecies has 0 to 6 radial spines that are ocher yellow to greyish and slightly curved.

The two subspecies Thelocactus rinconensis subsp. Accepted by Alessandro Mosco and Carlo Zanovello in 2000 . freudenbergeri (R. Haas) Mosco & Zanov. and Thelocactus rinconensis subsp. nidulans (Quehl) Glass , which differ in their area of distribution, thorns and flower color, are synonyms for Thelocactus rinconensis .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (CR) ". H. listed as not endangered.
